Abstract

Takayasu's arteritis is a inflammatory disease affecting large vessels, such as the aorta and its main branches. Eight patients with Takayasu's arteritis were treated surgically from January 1990 to December 1997 at Asan Medical Center. These patients were categorized in three groups by the angiographic findings: 4 in Type I, 1 in Type II, 3 in Type III. The performed surgical procedures were coronary artery bypass graft in 2, subclavian-axillary artery bypass in 1, carotid artery reconstruction in 1, axillary-axillary artery bypass in 1, right axillary-left vertebral artery bypass in 1, aortic arch-both common carotid artery and carotid-right subclavian artery bypass in 1, aortoiliac & aroto-right renal artery bypass in 1 patient. There were no morbidity or mortality. Follow up was available in seven patients. Five patients received antiplatelet treatment, one had both antiplatelet and prednisolone, and the other had prednisolone and methotrexate. Favorable surgical prognosis is expected in patient whose disease's activity is stable. Continuation of medical treatment is important in patients with active process of diseases.
