Abstract

Background
This study aimed to determine the association between maintaining healthy habits and the number of well-controlled clinical outcomes in patients with chronic diseases taking medication.
Methods
The population in this 6-month prospective cohort study was registered from November 4, 2016, to February 27, 2017; 297 patients with one or more clinical outcomes of chronic diseases (diabetes, dyslipidemia, or hypertension) were registered and followed up. Patients were divided into those who had an increased number of well-controlled chronic diseases and those who did not have an increased number of well-controlled chronic diseases. The adoption of the 12 healthy habits in the transtheoretical model was compared between the groups. Multiple logistic regression analysis analyzed the association of each healthy habit with the number of well-controlled chronic diseases, with adjustment for age and sex. An analysis of the association with adjustment for age, sex, and medication was also conducted.
Results
Patients maintaining the four habits of regular exercise, a balanced diet, proactive living, and helping others tended to have an increased number of well-controlled clinical outcomes with statistically significance. The four habits indicated a significantly higher probability of an increased number of well-controlled clinical outcomes regardless of age and sex. After the adjustment for age, sex, and medication, these data suggest that adopting the four habits increases the number of well-controlled clinical outcomes.
Conclusion
Proactive living, helping others, exercising regularly, and having a balanced diet might be recommended for patients with chronic diseases taking medication.
