The Statistical Study on the Disabled Children in SamYook Children's Rehabilitation Center

Abstract

This paper presents the statistical survey on the 394 patients who had been treated at Sam Yook Rehabilitation Center during the period of five years, from Oct. 1962. to Sep. 1967. Of the 394 patients 254 (64.5%) were male and 140(35.5) female; the age ranged from two to twenty-three years. Two hundred and eleven patients had been operated on, and among them 154 were victims of poliomyelitis. 170 cases (43.1%) of the total number were the victims of poliomyelis, cerebral palsy 79 cases (20.1%) and joint tuberculosis 71 cases (18.0%). The most common deformities due to the late effect of poliomyelitis were 84 feet with talipes valgus, 63 feet of genu recurvatum and genuvalgum respectively. and 57 hips with flexion contracture. Yount's fasciotomy was done on 67 limbs, heel cord lengthening procedure on 51, and Soutters operation on 49. Of the 79 cases of cerebral palsy. 78 were spastic. Of seventy one patients with the joint tubberculosis, 30 had the involvement of the spine, 25 that of hip. and 14 that of knee. 16 cases of posterior spinal fusion, 11 hip fusion and 6 knee fusion were done.
