An analysis of 1018 cases of ultrasonography

Abstract

Ultrasound is an especially helpful diagnostic tool in assesssing various diseases in various organs as well as differentiating cystic masses from solid ones, with ease safety, reproducibility, and high accuracy. Authors analyzed total 1018 cases of ultrasonography that were studied in last seven months from March-15-'79 to Oct.-31-'79, at the Department of Radilogy, Seoul National University Hospital. The results were as follows; 1. Among the 1018 cases, 421 cases were male and 597 cases of female. The distribution was from several months to 83 years, and 88% of all cases were in 20 to 69 years of age. 2. Sites of scanning: Liver, G.B. and biliary systems376, thyroid 185, kidney 192, pelvis 121, abdomen 70, pancreas 48, eyeball 14, and others 12. 3. Hepatobilitary system 376; Normal 174, hepatomegaly 12, hepatoma 7, metastases 6, abscess 6, cirrhosis 2, hepatic cyst 1, hemangioma 1, agensis of left lobe1. 4. G.B. stones 106, cholecystitis 35, bilitary tree dilatation 13, enlarged G.B. 7, C.B.D. stone 5, cystic duct stone 4, C.B.D. cancer 6, G.B. cancer 1, choledochal cyst 1, non-visualized G.B. 8. 5. Thyroid, 185; Nodule 147 --- solid 56, cystic 70, complex 21. Diffuse enlargement 29, normal scan 7, unidentified 2. 6. Pancreas, 48; Normal 17, pancrestitis 4. pancreatic cancer 22, pseudocyst 4, unidentifed 1. 7.Abdomen, 77(excluding liver, G.B. and pancreas); Normal scan 31, solid tumor 14-- lymphoma group 12, mesenchymaorgin 2. multiple lymph node enlargement 13, aortic aneurysm 4, retroperitoneal mass 2, subphrenic abscess 2, abdominal wall abscess 2, unknown solid mass 4, not contributory 4. 8. Kidney, 194, Normal scan 44, size and markings for biopsy 75, hydronephrosis 21, renal cyst 8 polycystic disease 8, solid renal tumor 10, renal stone 7, agenisis or hypoplasia 2, contracted kidney, both 7, enlarged kidney due to lymphoma and compensatory hyperplasia2, contracted kidney, both 7, enlarged kidney due to lymphoma and compensatory hyperplasia 5, renal tbc 2, perirenal abscess 1, perirenal hematoma 1, movable kidney 1, bladder tumor 1m transplanted kidney1. 9. In 8 casesof polycystic diseases of kidney, 1 case combined with liver involvement, other 1 case with liver, pancreas, splenic involvement. 10. Ob. & Gyn. filelds, 122; 1) 57 in Gyn. field -- normal 4, massive ascites 4, overian cyst21, overian teratodermoid 7, uterine myoma 7, H-mole 6, cervix & rectal cancer follows-up 6, PID with abscess 2.2) 65 in Ob. filed -- normal scan 3, detection of early pregnancy 27, fetal cephalometry & presentation 16,placental locatization 11, with normal 6, placenta previa 5, fetal death 5, multiple pregnancy 2, fetalanomaly(anencephaly) 1. 11. Eyeballs and orbit; 14 cases, 7 cases of retinal detachment, vitreus opacity due to hemorrhage or exudation with clinical contribution in all cases. Exact localization and extent of disease could be done in 2 cases of choroidal melanoma. 12. We could have great diagnostic advantage in arious aspects by ultrasonography, and if we use it as a complementary study with other diagnostic methods, we could expect better results under the previous experiences.
