The Effect of Alveolar Hypoxia on Hepatic Tissue in Phenobarbital - pretreated Rats

Abstract

The experimental model of the rats pretreated with phenobarbital under hypoxic condition was used to study for the effect of halothane on liver. Authors studied the effect of phenobarbital pretreatment and/or hypoxic condition per se on liver using above experimental model. 40 wister rat was divided into four groups; control group(normal condition), phenobarbital group (phenobarbital pretreatment). hypoxia group(under hypoxic condition), phenobarbital+ hypoxia group(phenobarbital pretreatment and under hypoxic condition). After above preparation the experimental rats had laparatomy and thoracotomy. Blood sample for SGOT and SGPT was obtained from right ventricle and right upper lobe of liver was resected for pathologic examination. There was no statistically significant differance of SGOT and SGPT among groups. The microscopic change of liver of phenobarbital group was not significant comparing with that of control group. But the microscopic finding of hypoxia group showed ballooning change in centrilobular area and that of phenobarbital+hypoxia group showed ballooning change in periportal area as well as centrilobular area. So the conclusion is that hypoixia per se can produce liver damage and that damage can be more diffuse if pfenobarbital was pretreated.
