Abstract

Biofeedback training is a useful methods to reduce the psychological and physiologic tension with induce psychophysiologic symptoms. Recently, we applied biofeedback therapy on the treatment of patients with psychogenic impotence in order to investigate effectiveness of this therapy for those patients. Two steps of biofeedback traning using Biolab-21 and Polygraph system was provided for patients whose etiology of impotence proved to be pure psychogenic following full differential diagnosis of impotence. As a first step, the training was focused on the excitatory self control of the patient's general biologic rhythm with heart rate, body temperature, electroencephalographic and electromyographic activity. The second step focused on psychosexual training to induce and maintain penile erection and/or audiovisual stimulation. Of 4 patients who participated in this biofeedback training program, two showed satisfactory results in a 2 to 6 months period after initiation of treatment, by both objective and subjective evaulation; one showed no difference in penile erection, compared to his previous status; the remaining patient is on the way of follow-ups. These results suggest that biofeedback therapy may provide god results in the treatment of some patients with psychogenic impotence. However, further study is required to determine the long-term benefits of this form of therapy.
