Abstract

Many of the patients who experience pain, particularly chronic pain commonly suffer from depression. Pain has emotional and cognitive as well as sensory components. We often encounter cases where pain has not improved after an analgesic treatment of the sensory component of it and the biological origin of it has not found after all. Although the neurophysiological relationship between pain and depression is unclear, serotonin and norepinephrine, which are neurotransmitters related to depression, also play an important role in controlling pain. Pain, particularly chronic pain is a psychosomatic condition. Therefore, psychiatric treatments such as antidepressants, supportive psychotherapy, and relaxation may relieve the psychological and physical suffering.
