Multiplanar spine computed tomography

Abstract

The CT is useful inevaluation of bony structures and adjacent soft tissues of the spine. Recently, themultiplanar spine CT scan is highly superior than usual axial scan, because of easily demostrable longitudinaldimension, level of spine and spinal canal. We evaluated 62 cases of spine CT, whom complains of spinal symptoms,from July, 1982 to Jan. 1983. The results were as follows; 1. The sex distribution of cases were 45 male and 17female, ages were from 15 years to 76 years, and sites were 15 cervical spine, 42 lumbar spine and 21 sacralspine. 2. Sixty two cases of the CT diagnosis were reviewed and shows 19 cases of herniated intervertebral disc, 7cases of spine fracture, 5 cases of degenerative disease, 4 cases of metastatic cancer, 2 cases of posteriorlongitudinal ligament ossification, 1 case of cord injury and 24 cases of normal. 3. The CT findings of herniatedintervertebral disc were protruding disc, obliteration of anterior epidural fat, with or without indentation ofdural sac and calcification within posterior disc margin. In cases of trauma, the multiplanar spine CT scandetects more specific extension of the fracture sites, and it is alble to demonstrate relationship betweenfracture fragement and spinal cord, therefore operability can be decided. In cases of posterior longitudinalligament ossification, it is easy to demonstrate linear high density along posterior margin of vertebral bodies onsagittal reconstruction scan. 4. The CT is diagnostic in detection of spinal disease. However, multiplanar spineCT is more diagnostic than axial CT such as detecting the longitudinal dimension and demonstration of spinalcanal.
