A Clinical Study on Tuberculosis of the Elbow

Abstract

In recent years, the incidence of tuberculosis of bone and joint is being decreased with good hygine and the development of preventive medicine. Fifteen cases of tuberculosis of the elbow were studied in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Inchon Christian Hospital during the 12 consecutive years from January, 1967 to December, 1978. The result were obtained as follows: 1. Total cases of tuberculosis of bone and joint were 576. Among them, elbow joint occupied 15 cases (2.6%). 2. The ratio of males to females was 1:1.1 and the highest age incidence was 3rd. decade (33.3%). 3. The patients who visited our hospital within one year from the onset was 11(73.3%). 4. The most common chief complaint on admission was painful swelling about the elbow joint (40%) 5. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate was definitely increased in 60%. 6. There were 6 cases of associated tuberculosis (40%) and among them, pulmonary tuberculosis were 4 cases (26.7%). 7. The radiologic features of tuberculosis of the elbow were adjacent soft tissue swelling, erosion of bone, some degree rarefaction, destructive changes, joint space narrowing and mild reactive new bone formation. 8. Overall recurrence rate was 27.2%.
