Radiological consideration of neurogenic bladder in patients with traumatic spinal cord injury

Abstract

We evaluated 104 patients of neurogenic bladder secondary to traumatic spinal cord injury. Those werediagnosed by I.V.P. and V.C.U. at Korea Veterans Hospital during 9 years from Janury, 1978 to May, 1987. The typeof neurogenic bladder, complications and urethral configuration, according to the level of spinal cord injury werediscusses. The result were as follows: 1. The incidence of patient according to the level of spinal cord injurywas 49 out of 104 in those with vertebral lovel T7 or above, 15 out of 104 in those with T8- T10 level, and 40 inthose with vertebral level T11 or below. The incidence of UMNB was 67.35 in those with verterbral level T7 orabove, 53.3% in T8-T10. The incidence of LMNB was 62.5% in those with vertebral level T11 or below. 2. Overalincidence of urinary tract calculus was 32.7%. Highest incidence of calculus was 46.7% in those with vertebrallevel T8-T10. 3. Overall incidence of vesicoureteral reflux was 23.1%. Highest incidence of reflux was 46.7% inthose with vertebral level T11 or below. 4. Overall incidence of pyelonephritis was 26.9%. 5. Overall incidence ofhydronephrosis was 20.2%. Highest incidence of hydronephrosis was 27.5% in those with vertebral level T11 orbelow. 6. Almost entire urethra was shown funnel type in 66 out of 73 cases. Saccular dilatation of posteriorurethra was 7 cases. Saccular dilatation of posterior urethra with LMNB was 4 cases, which were occurred only inthose with vertebral level T11 or below.
