Carcinoma of the stomach in young adults

Abstract

Of patients examined during the 24 years from January 1963 to December 1986, we have reviewed 6116 cases ofgastric cancer. We found 126 cases of gastric carcinoma in patients below 30 years of age among 6116 cases ofgastric malignancy, which were confirmed by histopathological study at PMC in Chonju. In an attempt to identifyfruther the natural history of carcinoma of the stomach in young adults, we reviewed 126 cases of stomachcarcinoma in patients below 30 years of age at PMC. The results were as follows: 1. Among the gastric malignanciesthe incidence of gastric carcionoma in young adults was 2.1%. 2. The age ranged from 13 yeasrs to 29 years. & thepeak incidence occurred in the 3rd decade. 3. Male to female ratio was 1:1.03. 4. Common symptoms includedepigastric pain, indigestion, weight loss, and vomiting. The mean time interval between onset of symptoms & the1st visit to a phsicain was 12 months. 5. Usually diagnostic aids were UGI series, endoscopic examination &biopsy. 6. In the endoscopic finding Borrmamn type III was predominent. 7. The majority of tumors occurered in theantrum & Pyloric portion. 8. Histologic diagnosis were adenocarcinoma, signet righ cell carcinoma, & mucinouscardinoma, in orders.
