Abstract

The utility of the radioactive technetium-99m DTPA partition test in differentiating tuberculous meningitis from aseptic meningitis was assessed. The test was carried out in 20 patients with tuberculous meningitis, 12 patients with aseptic meningitis and 10 normal controls. The accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the 99mTc-DTPA partition test were found to be 86.9%, 100% and 86.4% respectively if a critical serum/CSF ratio of 2.5 was chosen. In all of the tuberculous cases the serum/CSF radioactive technetium ratio was below the critical value of 2.5, while the ratio was above this value in nine of twelve cases of aseptic meningitis and all of the normal controls. This result indicates that the radioactive 99mTc-DTPA partition test is a simple and useful one in the differential diagnosis of early state of tuberculous meningitis from other lymphocytic meningitis.
