Abstract

Influence of acute and chronic carbon monoxide poisoning in different concentrations on the kidney and other organs of white rats has been studied histopathologically and the following results were obtained: Experimental animals were divided as 1) control 2) acute poisoning with 1.0% carbon monoxide until death 3) chronic poisoning, moderate, with 0.1% carbon monoxide for 4 hours daily A-6-2: 6 days/week for 2 weeks A-6-4: 6 days/week for 4 weeks A-3-2' 3 days/week for 2 weeks A-3-4: 3 days/week for 4 weeks 4) chronic poisoning, mild, with 0.05% carbon monoxide for 4 hours daily B-6-2: 6 days/week for Z weeks B-6-4: 6 Jays/week for 4 weeks B-3-2' 3 days/week for Z weeks B-3-4: 3 days/week for 4 weeks. 1. In acute poisoning, moderate degree of congestion and hemorrhage throughout the organs was observed. Congestion was marked at the glomerulus, subcortical vessels and cortico-medullary juncture of the kidney 2. In moderate chronic poisoning, 3 days/week for 2 weeks, moderate degree of congestion and mild bleeding tendency throughout the organs were also observed. Occasional mild thickening of connective tissue and alveolar wall was found. There were mild perilobular degeneration of the liver and mild connective tissue hyperplasia of the red pulp. In moderate poisoning, 3 days/week for 4 weeks, somewhat more intense reaction than the previous group seemed to occur, but individual variation was present. 3. In moderate chronic poisoning, 6 days/week for 2 and 4 weeks, individual variation was more marked than the 3 days/week group. There were severe peri1obular degeneration and mononuclear cel1 infiltration of the heart muscle. Scattered mild round cell infiltration was observed in the kidney, 1iver and lung. J. In mild chronic poisoning, 3 days/week for 2 and 4 weeks, only mild congestion and occasiona1 localized hemorrhage, hard to differentiate from incidental findings in control, were seen. In mild chronic poisoning, 6 days/week for 2 and 4 weeks, there were mild congestion and very mild diffuse hemorrhage, some perilobular degeneration and thickening of alveolar %.all much less than the mode-rate chronic poisoning, 3 days/week for Z weeks group. 5. Some mild congestion of the testes in the moderate chronic poisoning,6 days/week for 4 weeks, was observed but it was not significant. The prostate gland did not show any significant histological change throughout the experiment. 6. There was no significant change in organ weight/body weight ratio throughout the entire experimental groups.
