Abstract

Uro-Vaxom(R)is a biologic response modifier containing 6 mg of immunostimulating fractions extracted from Escherichia coli and also stimulating the body's own defence mechanisms. The efficacy and safety of Uro-Vaxom(R) were evaluated in the patients with recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI). A total of 26 patients were treated with Uro-Vaxom(R)orally once-daily for 3 months and observed for further 3 months. The results obtained were as follows: 1. During the 6 months of the trial, the frequency of recurrences of UTI decreased in comparison with that of pretrial period. (on the average 1.15 as compared to 3.08 recurrences) 2. The improvement of dysuria and frequency was noted in 80% and 75%, respectively. 3. The side effects were mentioned in 2 cases: one with hunger pain and nausea, the other with pruritus. The results of this study shows that once-daily administration of Uro-Vaxom(R)is safe and effective in the treatment of recurrent urinary tract infection.
