Detection of Congenital Uterine Anomalies Using Three-Dimensional Ultrasound

Abstract


OBJECTIVE
To assess the value of three-dimensional[3D] ultrasound in the diagnosis of early pregnancy of congenital uterine anomalies.
METHODS
From April 1998 to December 1998, suspicious early pregnancy of ten patients requiring uterine cavity assessment were examined using three-dimensional sonography. The equipment used for 3-D examinations was Combison 530D[Medison, Korea] with an abdominal and vaginal probe.
RESULTS
Early pregnancies of a uterine anomaly detected in this study were 5 cases of normal pregnant uterus, 1 case of bicornuate uterus, 1 case of uterine didelphys, 2 cases of arcuate uteri, and 1 case of partial septate uteri.
CONCLUSION
The three orthogonal planes proved most helpful delineating the exact uterine nature and the ability to visualize between the uterine cavity and the myometrium. This method may be used reliably to diagnosis and classify congenital uterine anomalies.
