Corticosteroids Induced IOP Elevation After PRK

Abstract

The use of corticosteroids in PRK is used to reduce the corneal haze and decrease the regression of myopia. Its role is not justified but corticosteroids is used after PRK worldwide. This study of 890 patient and 1627 eyes was designed to determined the effect and the related causative factors of IOP elevation after PRK. We analyzed thses patients as age, sex, preoperative IOP, refractive errors, postoperative IOP, duration of IOP rise high IOP and last IOP. The incidence of IOP rise over 21 mmHg was 61 eyes(3.75%). We selected the 59 eyes for control group among 1627 eyes. The mena post poerative IOP measured with the Goldmann applanation tonometer decreased 3.03 mmHg as compared with the mean preoperative IOP. There was no difference between these two groups according to age, preoperative IOP, preoperative refractive errors. The results revealed some correlation between high myopia and increase of IOP but it was not significant statistically. The male sex seemed to be associated with the increase of IOP, but more population study needed to confirm it.
