Abstract

During one and a half year from July, 1991 to December, 1992, 52,681 enlisted soldiers were examined. On the basis of the power of the old and newly prescribed glasses, we reviewed the distributions of the refractive errors according to their types, the time periods, and the area they came from. Among 105,362 eyes examined, 35,577 eyes(33.77%) needed glasses. Ninety nine point six percents were myopic. while 0.4% were hyperopic. Among the astigmatisms 78.7% were with the rule, 11.7% were oblique, and 9.6% were against the rule. The sphere and the spherical equivalent of right eye showed significantly more myopic than those of left eye(p<0.01). There was a significant increase in the prevalence of the glasses wearing according to the time periods(p<0.001). The prevalence of the glasses wearing was higher in the area of large cities than in small cities and rural areas.
