The Expression of p27 Protein in Gastri c Adenocarcinoma

Abstract

BACKGROUND/AIMS: p27 is a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor with potential tumor supressor func tion. Reduced expression of p27 has been correlated with poor prognosis in patients with breast and colorectal cancers. In the present study, we assessed p27 expression in patients with gastric adenocar cinoma in relation to their clinicohistological features and prognosis.
METHODS
We evaluated p27 expression for 61 patients with gastric adenocarcinomas using the immunohistochemical staining and the results were analyzed regarding the survival and clinico-pathological parameters.
RESULTS
Immu noreactivity for p27 protein was detected in 22 patients (36.1%). The expression of p27 protein wa not correlated with age, sex, site, tumor invasion, tumor size, lymph node metastasis, distant metas tasis, or stage except histologic subtype (p=0.028). Survival curves revealed that the prgnosis was no significantly different between patients with p27 expression and those without p27 expression (p= 0.420).
CONCLUSIONS
Immunohisto-chemical analysis of p27 might be not useful for evaluating the functional status of patients with gastric adenocarcinoma.
