Abstract

Background
Recent examinations suggest that triglycerides (TG)/high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio is major predictive index for cardiovascular disease, but there has been little research regarding Korean population. We, therefore, investigated the associations between TG/HDL-C ratio and metabolic syndrome using a large-scale nationwide data.
Methods
We used the data of health screening program connected with the Korea Association of Health Promotion from January 2006 to December 2006. Among these, subjects of this study limited to 15,374 adults aged 20 years and more, with available waist circumference data. The association between metabolic syndrome and/or its components and TG/HDL-C ratio were examined. The metabolic syndrome was defined using criteria established by NCEP-ATP III.
Results
Numbers of metabolic syndrome group were 907 (13.0%) for male and 1,124 (13.3%) for female. In both gender, the level of TG/HDL-C ratio increased according to the number of metabolic syndrome components (P-trend<0.001). In multivariate logistic analysis with adjustment for potential confounders, odds ratios of highest TG/HDL-C ratio group for metabolic syndrome were 36.0 for male and 30.7 for female, compared with those of lowest group.
Conclusion
Our results demonstrate a significant relationship between TG/HDL-C ratio and metabolic syndrome.
