Transient Ischemic Attack in the Elderly

Abstract
- Transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a medical emergency and very frequently in the elderly. TIA is an acute episode of transient neurologic dysfunction that results from focal brain, spinal cord or retinal ischemia, and is not associated with acute brain infarction. The most popular risk stratification tool has been the Age, Blood pressure, Clinical features, Duration of clinical symptoms, and Diabetes (ABCD2) score. TIA patients in acute settings are at very high risk of subsequently stroke, especially among those with high ABCD2 score, positive diffusion-weighted image, intracranial or extracranial artery stenosis, atrial fibrillation, and multiple episodes of TIA. Geriatrician should be alert for the signs and symptoms of TIA.
