Abstract

Image artifacts are frequently encountered in clinical ultrasound. While some of them may be a source of misinterpretation, others may provide useful information related to the composition of underlying tissue. Majority of these artifacts is caused by violation of basic physical assumptions to assign the location and intensity of the received echo. Ultrasound artifacts arise secondary to errors related to multiple echo paths, ultrasound beam characteristics, velocity errors, or attenuation errors. Understanding the fundamental ultrasound physics and recognizing common ultrasound artifacts is essential for proper image interpretation and optimal patient care.
