Abstract

Purpose
This study attempted to identify the factors of communication disorders, by exploring the experiences of nurses.
Methods
12 nurses in two groups from six hospitals were focus group interviewed. Interviews were conducted with nurses who had experience in nursing patients with artificial intubation. The data was collected from January 4 to 29, 2023, and the interview took about 3~4 hours for each group. The research question were ‘What do you think about communication with intubated patients or patients with communication disorders in clinical nursing settings?’ and ‘What changes do you think are necessary to improve communication disorders?’. The contents of the interview was analyzed by the conventional content analysis method.
Results
The four core themes were communication disorders caused by the given environment, negative effects caused by lack of communication, continuous efforts required of nurses, institutional support from hospitals for improvement of communication in clinical settings.
Conclusion
Communication barriers must be addressed, which requires the efforts of nurses and institutions. The representative method of the solution proposed in this study was developing a language board with concentrated language for specific patient situations, using alternative communication methods.
