A Study of the Electrophoretic Patterns of Various Chest Patient`s Sera

Abstract

The movement of particles in an electric field, known as electrophoresis, is today one of the most important anàlytical tools available to the clinical laboratory. The electrophoretic diagrams of serum are not to be taken as specific for a particular disease but rather as an index to the physiologic condition of the patient. For example, if the diagram shows an excess of r-globulin, the inference is that the body is suffering from an infection, for most of the antibodies evoked by the presence of infectious microbes are r-globulin -like protein. An increase in à-globulin s, a result of the breakdown of tissue proteins, is likely to herald a fever-producing disease, such as pneumonia or tuberculosis. Following results have been obtained throu study on paper electrophoretic patterns of sera in 215 cases of various chest diseases with minimal tuberculosis 37, moderately advanced 43, far advanced 28, miliary tuberculosis 7, pleurisy 24, lung cancer 13, pneumonia 17, spontaneous pneumothorax 14, bronchial asthma 9, bronchiectasis 15, empyema 8 and 19 normal healthy individuds. 1. There were decrease in total protein comparing to control group but it were with in normal limits of phvsis ontological value. 2. There were profound reduction in albumin and A /G ratio from those of control group, and there were a definite tendency of changes in relation to the severicy and extent of disease such as advanced pulmonary tuberculosis, miliary tuberculosis, pleurisy, lung cancer, pneumonia and empyema. 3. The change of alpha 1-and beta globulin fraction were not prominent. 4. There were significant increase in alpha 2 -and gamma globulin fraction in every study group .
