Paragonimus Westermani Empyema with Total Atelectasis of Right Lung

Abstract

Twenty six years old man was referred to N.M.C. Department of Chest Medicineafrom local clinic due to bloody pleural effusion. He had suffered from coughing, bloody expectoration and exertional dyspnea 4 months ago and was treated with antituberculous drugs under the impression of tuberculous pleurisy. Chest PA showed a compact hazy density in the right thorax with shifting of the mediastinum to the left side. Accidentally Paragonimus Westermani ova was found by routine sputum cytologic examinations. Thoracentesis was done eleven times with black colored bloody pleural fluid total sum of 1100 ml was obtained, resulting in partial expansion of right lung with severe pleural thickening. There fore decortication was done and the lung expanded completely. P.W empyema with total atelectasis of the right lung was successfully treated by decortication.
