Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation for Dysphagia

Abstract

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is stimulation of innervated muscle to restore muscle function. NMES is used for improvement of swallowing function on dysphagia. NMES have various methods of electrodes attachment according to the purpose of application, and difference in intensity, duration, and the grade of protocol according to the patient's diagnosis and characters. Application with knowing the characteristics, steps of application, and precautions of NMES will have positive effects on improvement of swallowing function on dysphagia.
