Computed tomographic analysis of sellar and juxtasellar tumors

Abstract

CT is the method of choice for initial evaluation of patients with potential juxtasellar masses. This paper isbased on a retrospective study of 131 tumors in the juxtasellar area. All were examined with 2nd generation CTscanner (Delta FS 50) and verified histologically. The degree of resolution of the scanner used precludes itsreliability for detecting tumors less than 1 cm in diameter. Out of 9 microadenoma, only 2 were detectable oncoronal CT scan. But CT has proved completely reliable for detecting juxtasellar masses, the direction and degreeof extension and the presence of any calcific or cystic component of the lesion. Many CT appearances are shared bymore than one pathologic entitiy; a few are specific. However, with the correlation of clinical presentations andfurther neuroradiological studies, a specific diagnosis is possible in a large proportion of cases.
