Evaluation of congenital anomalies of the aortic arch by CT and MRI

Abstract

Eleven patients with congenial aortic arch anomalies were evaluated by CT, MR imaging: six patients had aright sided aortic arch with retroesophageal aberrant left subclavian artery; four patients had a left sidedaortic arch with aberrant right subclavian artery; and one had a double aortic arch. Presenting clinical symptoms were facial edema in one dysphagia and chest pain in two. The remaining eight patients were asymptomatic. Congenital anomalies of the aortic arch and its great vessels could well be evaluated with both CT and MRI. However, MRI demonstrated anomalous vessels more vividly for its multidirectional imaging capability and natural contrast between flowing blood and surrouding soft tissues.
