CT and MR imaging of closed head trauma

Abstract

The distribution and extent of traumatic lesions were evaluated with MR imaging in 40 patients with closed head injuries. The primary intraaxial lesions were classified into four main types, according to their topographical distribution within the brain : cortical contusion(54%), diffuse axomal injury(35%), subcorticalgray matter injury(4%), primay brain stem injury(7%). MR was found to be superior to CT and to be very useful inthe detection of traumatic head lesions and T2WI were most useful for lesion detection. But T1WI proved to be also useful for detection of hemorrhage and anatomical localization.
