The significance of pelvic CT scan in prostate cancer

Abstract

The CT scan is a good diagnostic method in the evaluation of prostatic cancer in terms of size and contour, invasion of adjacent organs and lymph node metastasis. We evaluated pulvic CT scan and compared its findings withthe final clinical stages in 20 patients with prostate adenocarcinoma and two cases of rhabdomyosarcoma atDepartment of Radiology, Korea University Hospital during recent 3 years. All the 9 cases which showed distantmetastases (bone, lung and paraaortic lymph node) displayed the pelvic CT findings with advanced involvement(CTstage C,D). Especially 2 cases with paraaortic lymphadenopathy also showed pelvic lymphadenopathy. The degree ofpelvic invovlement of prostate cancer on pelvic CT scan was closely related to its hematogeneous or extrapelviclymphogenous dissemination. In conclusion, pelvic CT scan is an effective modality in the initial staging ofprostate cancer.
