Intrapulmonary cysticercosis

Abstract

We recently experienced a case of pulmonary cysticercosis confirmed by open lung biopsy. As far as we know, there are few reports on the radiological findings of pulmonary cysticercosis in domestic and English literature. Chest radiographs and CT showed variable-sized multiple small round nodules on both lung fields, especially insubpleural location, The patient also had multiple calcific nodules on brain CT. Pulmonary cysticercosis might beincluded in a diagnositc consideration when chest radiographys show variable-sized multiple small lung nodules ina patient with infestation of cysticerci in other sites of the body.

Figure

  • Fig. 1. Pulmonary cysticercosis. a,b. The posteroanterior chest radiograph and chest CT show multiple, variable—sized, well- demarcated small nodular lesions on left upper and botn lower lobe- si arrows), especially in subpleural locations. c. On unenhanced brain CT, there are multiple small calcified nodules within brain parenchyma. d. Light microscopic view of tissue from the lung reveals a characteristic worm surrounded by inner cyst wall(arrow) and outer fibrous layer(arrowheads) (X20, Η and Ε stain).

  • Fig. 2. Follow—up chest radiograph, taken four months after medication with praziquantel, has no evidence of residual lung nodules any more.
