The adult tuberculosis prevalence in the isolated islands in Wando-Gun

Abstract

A photofluorographic mass survey by P-A chest ahd been done to the adult of the isolated islands in Wando-Gun,Chnonnam, Korea for 20 ays from April 25, 1975 to May 14, 1975. The results obtained were as follows; 1. A totalnumber of the villagers received x-ray mass survey was 1,646 and sex distribution was 940(57%) males and 706(43%)females. 2. A prevalence rate of active pulmonary tuberculosis was 6.7% and the male prevalence (9.3%) was 2.7times higher than that (3.4%) of female. 3. The prevalence by sex and age grups was higher in females in theyounger age groups, but in the older age groups it was higher in males. 4. The incidence of the involved side in atotal of 132 cases of active and inactive pulmonary tuberculosis was 53 cases (40.2%) on the right side, 21 cases(15.9%) on the left side, and 58 cases (43.9%) in both sides. 5. According to extent of active Tbc on the x-rayfilms, 47% was minimal, 38% moderately advanced, and 15% far advanced. Inactive Tbc was 21 cases (1.3% toobjective population). 6. The most frequent subjective symptoms in tuberculosis patient were cough and sputum, anda correlation between pulmonary tuberculosis and smoking was not recognized from our this survey.
