Clinical Observation on Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy

Abstract

A clinical study was made on 112 cases of benign prostatic hypertrophy, admitted to the Department of Urology, East City Hospital, Seoul, Korea during the period from January 1979 to December 1982.The results were summarized as follows.1. Benign prostatic hypertrophy were 112 cases of all 761 cases hospitalized, admission rate was 14.7%. 2. Majority of cases was found in 6th and 7th decades with mean age of 72,4 years old. 3. In composition of sexual life during 2th to 5th decades, long-term obstinence or irregular sexual life were 57 cases, long-term bachelohood were 38 cases, normal sexual life were 17 cases. 4. In most cases, the duration of the obstinence or the irregular sexual life was 11 years to 25 years. 5. The presenting symptoms were frequency in 94 cases, acute urinary retention in 59 cases and dysuria in 37 cases etc. 6. The blood chemistry showed elevated BUN in 83 cases and elevated creatinine in 61 cases. 7. The endoscopic examination was performed in 98 cases which revealed trabeculation in 87 cases, inflammation in 61 cases, kissing of lateral lobes in 46 cases and diverticular formation in 15 cases. 8. Hypertension in 12 cases and pulmonary tuberculosis in 12 cases were frequently associated with benign prostatic hypertrophy. 9. Methods of operative treatment were suprapubic prostatectomy in 24 cases, transurethral resection 21 cases and suprapubic cystostomy in 33 cases. 10.Postoperative complications were temporary incontinence in 33 cases, delayed bleeding in 8 cases, acute epididymitis in 3 cases and wound infection in 2 cases.
