Genitourinary Tuberculosis 43 Cases

Abstract

A clinical observation was made on 43 cases of genitourinary tract tuberculosis who were admitted to National Police Hospital during the period from January 1981 through December 1987. Following results were obtained. 1. Incidence of genitourinary tract tuberculosis was 2.3% of all patients. Male to female ratio was 2:1 and most common incidence was in the 4th decade. 2. Most common symptoms were those of vesical symptoms such as frequency(49%) and hematuria(37 %). 3. Previous tuberculosis histories were noted in 14 cases(32.2%) most of which were pulmonary tuberculosis. 4. Laboratory findings of urine were in order of pyuria(60%), hematuria(51 %), proteinuria (47%) and positive AFB in concentrated sediments(30%). 5. Excretory urographic findings were nonvisualization(41%), deformity of the ureter(28 %), delayed visualization(l7%) and caliectasis(17%). 6. Cystoscopic findings were active lesion of cystitis in 7 cases, deformed ureteral orifice in 7 cases, contracted bladder in 1 case and unremarkable in 2 cases. 7. Patients were managed by chemotherapy in 16 cases(37%), nephrectomy with chemotherapy in 12 cases(28%), epididymectomy with chemotherapy in 14 cases(33%) and ureteral reimplantation in 1 case. The short course chemotherapy using INH, rifampin and pyrazinamide was tried in 7 cases with good result and no recurrence during maximum 1 year follow-up period.
