Epidemiologic Pictures and Cardiovascular Sequelae of Kawasaki Disease in Gwangju, Chonnam Area

Abstract

For the epidemiologic study and the rate of cardiac sequelae of Kawasaki disease of in Gwangju, Chonnam area, we sent a questionnaire to a university hospital and general hospitals in Gwangju, Chonnam area and summarized the data from hospitals that responded. An epidemiologic survey on Kawasaki disease during 1994 through 2005 was performed retrospectively. Over these 12 years, a total of 1,493 children were collected. The male-to-female ratio and mean age of the total number of cases was 1.6 : 1 and 3.0+/-0.2 years, respectively. Average annual incidence was 124.4+/-26.6 cases and higher incidence is 167 cases in 1998, 153 cases in 2000 and 147 cases in 2002. Monthly incidence showed higher incidence 9.71% in January, 9.78% in May and 10.45% in July although it developed all the year round. The proportion of patients with Kawasaki disease among total hospitalized pediatric patients was 1% on the average. The proportion of sibling cases was 0.2% and rate of recurrence cases was 0.87%. Echocardiogram was performed in 97.1% of patients, and coronary abnormalities was detected in 17.7% of cases including 16.8% of dilatations and 1.4% of aneurysms.
