The Change of Pulmonary Functions During The Normal Pregnancies in Healthy Women

Abstract

OBJECT: Dyspnea is a common feature of pregnancy, occuring 60 to 70% of normal pregnant women. It usually is a normal physiological response in pregnant women, and it typically does not interfere with daily activities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the change of pulmonary functions during the normal pregnancies in healthy women. Material and
METHODS
Forced spirometry and body plethysmograph were performed in 14 normal pregnant women at first (10+/-1.8 weeks), second (26+/-2.9 weeks) and third (38+/-0.4 weeks) trimester serially.
RESULTS
Pulmonary function remained well within normal limits during pregnancy. At term, FVC increased (7.1%) and FEV1 and PEF tended to increase slightly but MMFR tended to decrease slightly. The airway resistance remained normal range. There was an decrease in the RV which coupled with the reduced ERV. This resulted in 18% diminution of FRC at term. But it was compensated by a corresponding increase of the IC (19.4%), so TLC decreased very slightly.
CONCLUSION
Normal pregnancies in healthy women cause no significant alterrations in the pulmonary function. Whereas the study in the pregnant women with severe dyspnea or respiratory disease would be needed.
