Abstract

Despite a wide variety of optic disc appearance among individual and race, presently, we use a software program provided by the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph[HRT, Heidelberg engineering GmbH, Heidelberg, Germany] originally applied to the western people. Therefore, the objective of this research is to find optic disc parameters significant for glaucomatous visual field defect and a discriminant formula among Korean people. The HRT and Humphrey automated perimetry, program C30-2 testing were conducted to 519 eyes of 275 patients at Kangnam St. Mary`s Hospital from March to August in 1998. Using software: IR1-V2.01, 12 values of parameters was analyzed and discriminant formula was elicited through discriminant analysis. A discriminant formula was drawn by analyzing rim volume, height variation contour, cup shape measure, all of which were meaningful HRT parameters only to the western people. The formula's accuracy was 71.8%, its sensitivity 74.46%, and its specificity 69.75%. However, this study excluded height variation contour because its p value was more than 0.05. With only rim volume, cup shape measure applied, the accuracy of the formula was 72.64%, its sensitivity 74.46%, and its specificity 71.18%. Based on these, "z= -1.87+4.65 *rim volume -4.48*cup shape measure"obtained as the very Korean way of new HRT discriminant formula, is expected to be useful in diagnosis of domestic glaucoma patients in the future.
