Abstract

Propylthiouracil (PTU) is a drug used commonly to treat hyperthyroidism. Among its side effects, hepatotoxicity is the most serious, although it appears rarely. Hepatotoxicity due to PTU is known to be related to immune reaction. We experienced two cases of acute hepatitis which had developed during PTU therapy for hyperthyroidism. In both cases, liver function tests showed highly elevated levels of transaminases and bilirubin. One of two cases showed a pattern of acute toxic hepatitis combined with cholestasis by liver biopsy. Discontinuation of PTU leads to biochemical and clinical improvement.
