Two Cases of Subacute Thyroiditis Following COVID-19 Vaccination

Abstract

Subacute thyroiditis is a self-limited inflammatory disease that is mainly caused by viral infection. Since the emergence of the coronavirus disease, several effective vaccines have been introduced. Several cases have been reported developing subacute thyroiditis after receiving the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine. This paper presents an 81-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man who developed subacute thyroiditis soon after receiving the adenovirus-vectored COVID-19 vaccine. These patients presented with neck pain and laboratory tests showed increased free T4, low thyroid stimulating hormone, and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). ^99mTc scintigraphy showed poor visualization of the thyroid gland. Thyroid ultrasonography revealed severe hypoechoic, ill-defined areas. Thyroid function and ESR were normalized and ultrasound findings were improved after treatment. Here, the author reports two cases of subacute thyroiditis occurring after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, and an accompanying literature review.
