Monocytes and High-density Lipoprotein Cholesterol in Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion

Abstract

Purpose
To evaluate the levels and ratios of monocytes and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the blood of patients with branch retinal vein occlusion.
Methods
We selected 19 patients for the branch retinal vein occlusion group and 20 patients for the control group. We analyzed the blood test results based on levels of monocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The monocyte to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were used as inflammatory markers and measured.
Results
The monocyte count was 0.58 ± 0.10 (10 3 /µL) in patients with branch retinal vein occlusion and 0.53 ± 0.13 (10 3 /µL) in the control group (p = 0.309). The high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level was 44.65 ± 13.22 mg/dL in patients with branch retinal vein occlusion and 47.15 ± 13.32 mg/dL in the control group (p = 0.588). There was no statistical difference between the two groups. The MHR was 14.2 ± 5.50 in patients with branch retinal vein occlusion and 11.9 ± 3.60 in the control group, which was significantly higher in patients with branch retinal vein occlusion (p = 0.022). The NLR was 2.2 ± 0.60 in patients with branch retinal vein occlusion and 2.1 ± 1.40 in the control group, showing no statistical significance (p = 0.216).
Conclusions
We confirmed that MHR is elevated in patients with branch retinal vein occlusion and can be used as a predictor of this disease.
