Abstract

Most causes of carpal tunnel syndrome are idiopathic, but aberrant structures can sometimes be responsible for the etiology of carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel release was performed after a diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome in a 65-year-old female patient who complained of median neurology in the right hand. During surgery, the flexor digitorum superficialis brevis muscle of the fifth finger was observed compressing the median nerve. After surgery, the neurological symptoms improved immediately, but independent flexion of the proximal interphalangeal joint no longer occurred. Carpal tunnel syndrome associated with flexor digitorum superficialis brevis has not been reported in Korea. This paper reports the case with a literature review.
