Epizootiological and Bacteriological Studies of Bovine Tuberculosis in Korea -Report 2 A Study on the Acid-Fast Bacteria Isolated from Tuberculin Reactors of Dairy Cattle in 1971

Abstract

A study was carried out on the isolation of acid-fast bacteria from 118 specimen which collected from 14 dairy cattle of tuberculin reactors in 1971. Those cultures were identified according to the Runyon’s classification and other methods available.
Results
obtained are as follows. (1) Out of 118 specimens, 24 (or 20.3%) yielded acid-fast bacteria from tuberculin reactors Most specimens were found in spleen and lymph nodes of submaxillary which showed 16. 6% respectively. (2) AIl the strains of acid-fast bacteria isolated were classified in accordance with Runyon’s schema; 4.2% were group-II scotochromogens . 62.5% were group-III nonphotochromogens, and 33.3% were group-IV rapid grower. (3) Twenty-four strains of mycobacteria obtained were subdivided into 11 strains of Myc. terrae (radish). which formed 45.8% of the total acid-fast bacteria isolated, 7 strains or 21. 9% of Myc. fortuitum and 1 strain or 4.2% of Battey-avium subgroup and Myc. gordonae. (4) The distribution of Mycobacteria species isolated from the dairy cattle and from the soil was in similar fashion. This aspect should be confirmed in further studies.
