The epidemiological trends and clinical results of the patients treated on a domiciliary basis at the KNTA Seoul TB clinic

Abstract

A total of 333 pulmonary tuberculosis patients registered during the 3 years from the beginning of 1968 to the end of 1970 at the KNTA Seoul Branch. TB Clinic, were selected randomly. and were analysed for a period of 2 years since their respective registrations at the clinic. This study was made retrospectively for an evaluation of the general status of treatment and clinical results on ambulatory treatment patients. The results obtained were as follows. The largest age group among the total pulmonary tuberculosis patients sampled was between 20 and 39 years old (68. 1 %); the next one was 40 to 59 years old (21 . 9%). In regard to the initial classifications of the patients' extend of disease, 47. 1% were moderately advanced, 34.8% minimal, and 18. 0% far advanced. The Iargest number by extent of disease in the youngest age group (0-19Y) was found to be theminimal group with 66.7%. 55.9% of the patients had previous chemotherapy with primary line drugs only 6% of them had previous Chemotherapy with secondary drugs, and 38.1% of them had no previous chemotherapy history. 35% of the totaI patients sampled terminated treatment within 3 months, 35% of them continued their treatment for at least 12 months, and only 10% of them continued for 24 months or more. 45% of the patients had regular treatments,15% of them had irregular treatment and 40% of them visited only once to recieve an exact diagnosis or to know what drug regimen should be recommended. only 18.9% of patients completed the treatment with satisfactory results. There were no significant changes of epidemiological trends between, 1968, 1969 and 1970. 144 (64.2%) of the patients showed x-ray improvement within 12 months, while 43 (35. 0 %) of the patients had improvement within 12-24 months. Among those tested bacteriologically after 3 months. 50% were revealed to be sputum negative.
