Prediction of Normal Values of Vital Capacity in Teenagers

Abstract

In order to establish predicted normal values of the vital capacity in teenager, vital capacity were measured in 50 boys and 54 girls. The numbers of the subjects studied were almost evenly distributed for each age between 10 and 19 years in both sexes, and the vital capacity was measured by water-sealed and water-less spirometers. Based upon the relation of the vital capacity to body surface .area (BSA), the following regression equations for the prediction of the normal values in boys and girls were obtained. Vital capacity in boys (ml.) Water-sealed:-1526.4+ 3552.9 BSA Water-1éss :-1554.0+ 3493.1 BSA . Vita1 capacity in gir1s (ml.) Water-sealed:- 215.2+ 2269.2 BSA Water-less :- 98.7+ 2083.7BSA
