An unusual clinical isolate of Aspergillus fumigatus Series from a patient with fungus ball in a cystic change

Abstract

A strain of Aspergill μs fumigatμs series was isolated from a 34-year-old female patient having a distinct fungus ball shadow in a cystic change on her chest radiographs. Macroscopic and microscopic morphology of this isolate did not fit in the published descriptions of species in the A. fumigatus series. This isolate grossly resembled A. fumigatus but its detailed morphological characteristics were evidently different from this species. Sera from the patient produced positive precipitin reaction with young mycelial extract (ME) and 9 month-old culture filtrate antigen of A. fumigatus but not with 4 month-old culture filtrate antigen of the clinical isolate from the patient's own sputum specimens.
