Diagnostic Value in Percutaneous Needle Biopsy of Pleura

Abstract

From August 1977 to August 1979, 54 patients with exudative pleuraI effusion were admitted to Chosun University HospitaI. For diagnostic purposes, percutaneous needle biopsy of the pleura with Abrams and/or Cope needle was performed. The pathological diagnosis were compared with the cIinical diagnosis in order to evaluate the diagnostic value of needle biopsy. In addition, bacteriologic and cytologic studies were also performed. The resuIts were as folIows: 1. The final diagnoses were obtained in 92.6% to the. patients. In order of frequency, the incidence of tuberculosis was 63.0% and that of metastatic cancer was 29.6%. 2. It was found that for the patients with tuberculosis the cIinical diagnosis was same as the final diagnosis in 88.9% of cases and in the patients with cancer the rate was 71.2%. 3. In patients with tuberculosis, the cIinicaI diagnosis was same as the pathological diagnosis in 66.1% of cases and in the patients with cancer the rate was 50.0%. 4. In comparing pathological diagnosis with finaI diagnosis, 70.6% of final diagnosis of tuberculosis was confirmed by pathological diagnosis and 56.0% of cancer cases. No case of pathological diagnosis was contradicted by finaI diagnosis. This proves that the pathological diagnosis has a very high diagnostic value.
