A Case of Malignant Mesothelioma with Pleural Effusion

Abstract

In 1931, Klempere and Rabin advocated general use of the term mesothelioma for primarypleural tumors originating from the surface lining cells or the mesothelium. Thereafter an association between exposure to asbestos arid subsequent .development of malignant mesothelioma of the pleura was first suggested by Wagnar, Sleggs and Marchand, and it was confirmed by several other reports. In addition to their pleural origin, mesotheliomas of other serosal surface such as peritoneum, pericardium and tunica vaginalis of the testis are well known. The pleural site is most frequently involved and accounts for 60 % to 70% of all reported mesothelioma. In England, Canada, the United States and South Africa, there are many case reports but in Korea, report of mesothelioma is rare. We report a case of malignant mesothelioma without evidence of asbestos exposure in 42-year-old male, which was suspected clinical investigation, and confirmed by pleural biopsy and left axillary lymph node biopsy.
