Change of Pulmonary Function After Hemodialysis in Chronic Renal Failure

Abstract

The changes of pulmonary function before and after hemodialysis were evaluated in patients with terminal stage of chronic renal failure, who were regularly managed by dialysis with weekly twice interval. The results were as follows; 1) The pattern of pulmonary function tests before dialysis were suggestive of mild degree of restrictive lung disease. The diffusing capacity (DLco) was slightly decreased and however, it showed normal range after correction with standard Hb (14.7 gm/dl) by Cotes equation. 2) Although FVC, TLC,- FEV, and MMFR were significantly increased and improved immediately after hemodialysis, DLco was considerably decreased. This reduction in lung diffusing capacity probably reflects the reversible pulmonary damage caused by leukocytes.
