The Activities of Leucocytic Acid Phosphatase in Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Abstract

It has been known that the activation of phagocytic activity of macrophage will induce the increment of leucocyte lysosomal enzyme activity. 1t also has been reported that the leucocyte lysosomal enzyme activity is increased in experimental tuberculosis, and acid phosphatase is one of the predominant lysosomal enzymes implicated. In order to evaluate the diagnostic value of leucocytic acid phosphatase (LAP) as an index of activity in pulmonary tuberculosis patients we measured the LAP activity in active pulmonary tuberculosis patients and obtained the following results. 1) The mean activity of LAP of active pulmonary tuberculosis patients was 14.7 ± 6.0 and it was significantly higher than the control value of 6.2 ± 2.8 (p < 0.005). 2) The mean activity of LAP showed no significant difference between the cavitary and non-cavitary pulmonary tuberculosis groups and also showed no relation with the extent of the disease and between primary and re.treatment groups. 3) Some difficulties in standardization of LAP activity counting was encountered during this study and the poor staining intensity was considered as major limitation factor.
