Cefotiam Concentrations in Bronchial Secretions

Abstract

The penetration of cefotiam into bronchial secretions was evaluated in 20 patients with acute bacterial infections after administration of a single intravenous dose of cefotiam 1 g. Bronchial secretions were aspirated bronchoscopically, in 1, 2, 3 & 4 hours after cefotiam infusion and serum was sampled simultaneously. Cefotiam concentrations were measured by thin layer cup methods. Cefotiam concentrations in bronchial secretions were 2.2, 2.5, 2.2, 3.3 mcg/ ml at 1, 2, 3 and 4 hours, respectively, which were higher than minimum inhibitory concentrations for E . coli, K. pneumonia, H. influenza & P. mirabilis. The ratios of the cefotiam concentration in the bronchial secretion to that in the serum at the same tirne were 0.70 and 1.27 in 3 & 4 hours. The results confirm the rapid and significant diffusion of cefotiam into the bronchial secretion, especially in the presence of acute bacterial infection.
