Controlled Comparative Study of the 6-Month and 9-Month Short Course Regimen in the Chemotherapy of Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Abstract

A controlled comparative study of 6-month short course chemotherapy regimen (2HERZ/ 4HER) and standard 9-month short course chemotherapy regimen (9HER) was undertaken in patients with sputum.positive or radiologically active pulmonary tuberculosis in the out patient clinic of Kyung Hee University Medical Center. Among 256 patients who have been registered and studied, 45 of 155 patients randomized to 6-month regimen (29%) and 39 of 101 patients randomized to 9-month regimen (39%) were dropped out prematurely. Bacteriological negative conversion rates at 2-month after chemotherapy were 86.3% in 6-month group and 85.7% in 9-month group. Treatment failure rates were 1.8% (2 of 110) in 6-month group and 1.6% (l of 62) in 9-month group. Relapse rates during 6-month fol1ow-up period were 1.5% (1 of 68) in 6-month group anq 5.1 % (2 of 39) in 9-month group Bacteriological negative conversion rates, treatment failure rates and relapse rates between two regimen groups showed no statistically significant differences (t = 0.61 , t = 0.1 , t = 1.09). There was no case of treatment interruption due to drug adverse reaction in these two regimen groups. Therefore, this 6-month regimen (2HERZ/ 4HER) was effective and could be recommended as a promising regimen for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis.
